In a matter of weeks in 1994, around 800,000 people were systematically killed in Rwanda, an event that is now referred to simply as the Rwandan Genocide. Few events can compare with the Rwandan Genocide’s scale and brutality. Why did it happen? Why did so many people choose to participate? What role do ethnicity and colonialism play? How does this enter into broader regional concerns, such as conflict in the Congo that has claimed the lives of over 5 million people? These questions and more will be discussed in this course. Reading and class participation will be requirements, as there is a wealth of scholarship and many points of controversy meriting serious discussion.
