And this is one of the major questions of our lives: how we keep boundaries, what permission we have to cross boundaries, and how we do so.

— A. B. Yehoshua

This academic term we’ll take as a starting point for thinking and writing the multitude of ways that boundaries are crossed and what the crossing of boundaries implies in a variety of contexts. We’ll consider people who move across personal or geographic boundaries, transgress ethical boundaries, as well as considering the boundaries and the breaking of boundaries involved in writing and in art, to name a few examples. Though the readings will touch on ways that boundaries are maintained or crossed, the theme of the course will serve as a doorway into a variety of issues that you will be invited to discover and define. In addition to preparing you as writer in college, you’ll also get to be creative, writing in a number of styles and working with images and new media. Readings will include The Autobiography of Red, by Anne Carson, and Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, as well as a variety of essays, stories, poems, and images.
