PHYSICS 125 - General Physics: Mechanics and Sound
Section: 100
Term: FA 2010
Subject: Physics (PHYSICS)
Department: LSA Physics
Course Note:
Uniform evening midterm exam on Thursdays, October 7, November 4, and December 2.
Requirements & Distribution:
BS, NS, QR/1
Credit Exclusions:
No credit granted to those who have completed or are enrolled in PHYSICS 135, 140 or 160.
Advisory Prerequisites:
Two and one-half years of high school mathematics, including trigonometry. Students should elect PHYSICS 141 concurrently.
Other Course Info:
Fall 2010 term is the last time PHYSICS 125 will taught.
This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:

PHYSICS 125 is the first of a two-term sequence offered primarily for students without a calculus background. PHYSICS 125 and 126 form an appropriate sequence for any student wanting an introduction to the basic principles of physics but without the mathematical sophistication of PHYSICS 135 and 235 or PHYSICS 140 and 240. Strong emphasis is placed on problem solving, and skills in rudimentary algebra and trigonometry are assumed. Topics covered during the first term include vectors, one- and two-dimensional motion, Newton's laws of motion, gravitation, rotational motion, momentum, energy, pressure in fluids, oscillations, and waves. The course grade is based on homework, three evening examinations, class performance and a final examination. PHYSICS 125 students should elect PHYSICS 141 (lab).
