SPANISH 275 and 276 (C- or better) or Graduate Standing.
Advisory Prerequisites:
Students who have not taken SPANISH 275 and 276 at U-M must schedule a placement exam with the instructor.
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:

Students are expected to acquire the ability to understand conversational Brazilian Portuguese, to communicate and convey ideas satisfactorily in everyday practical situations with native Brazilian speakers, read newspapers, write short essays, and be acquainted with elements of the Brazilian culture. The functional skills acquired by students usually depends on the amount of time they invest in the course, including active class participation and the minimum of two hours of outside preparation for every hour of class.

Classroom activities involve introduction or review of vocabulary and grammatical structures that are different from Spanish, listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks, group skits, role-plays, and one group presentation of a cultural project.

Homework involves completing daily activities on the workbook, reviewing grammar, writing brief notes, and researching on the Internet to complete the treasure hunts.

Grading is based on class attendance and participation (crucial for progress) quizzes, a midterm, 2 speaking exams, a cultural project, short essays, Internet research and a final exam.v

Required material: The Ponto de Encontro text and workbook, a dictionary, and a grammar book. Highly recommended: 501 verbs. Sold at MI Book and Supply.
