This course will focus on science writing — the kind of writing you see in Scientific American or Popular Science. By paying close attention to what a science reader needs, we will learn how to meet and take advantage of the readers’ expectations — a skill that will be useful for any writing assignment, science-based or not, here at UM and beyond.

We will start by learning about the ideas behind a scientific topic, and end with explaining them, in writing, the same way a science reporter would. You don’t have to be a science or engineering student to succeed in this class, but you do have to be enthusiastic about scientific topics. We will use that enthusiasm to help you develop as an academic writer. We will learn to determine the audience who will read your work, to gather evidence and summarize it in a logical way, and to synthesize work from a variety of sources. We will read popular science articles to learn how writers put them together, look into the primary research that spurred the media attention, and write papers about science in a way that is well organized and easy to read.
