Course Note:
In this course students learn how to integrate new technologies into their writing. Depending on the specific topic, it incorporates a variety of media, including Power Point, websites, electronic portfolios, visual texts, blogs, podcasts, audio, and video. The emphasis of SWC 200, however, is not on the technologies themselves. Rather the course focuses on how writers can use rhetorical strategies to write effectively with new media.

Type “blog” into Wikipedia and you’ll learn any number of fun facts: the definition, the etymology, those who claim to have invented it. If you Google the word, you’ll be inundated with links to create your own blog; paid services to accomplish this; author and marketer Seth Godin, whose link, at least in March 2010, precedes links to the blogs of Kanye West and the White House. What any casual blog surfer soon discovers is that the estimated 100 million-plus blogs in existence seems conservative.

This class’ purpose is two-fold: first, to add your voice to this one hundred million by creating a blog of your own; and, second, to familiarize yourself with — and, yes, question — a range of rhetorical stances permeating blogging.

In this course we’ll examine both theoretical issues of blogs — history, ethics, politics, audience — and the creative components they incorporate — how text and image work together, tone, links. Familiarity with the web is expected; technical expertise is not.

Requirements: Students will post weekly blogs. At the course’s end, a portfolio consisting of your ten favorite blog posts and a 5-page self-evaluation of your work will be due. Over the course of the term, students will also produce two response papers to readings and a blog analysis. Your writing accounts for 70% of your grade; engaged, thoughtful participation in both class and on your classmates’ work comprises 30%.
