Our objective in this course is to understand the ways ordinary people in Africa are, and have been, responding to the AIDS epidemic. To this end we shall examine the history of the virus in Africa (its origins, evolution, and paths of infection). We shall study political responses through the emergence of the global AIDS industry and programs implemented by African states. And we shall consider how ordinary people in particular contexts — contexts in part shaped by the larger political responses to AIDS — have fashioned their own understandings of the epidemic and strategies for protecting themselves.
