FA 2011 American Culture AMCULT 102 - First Year Seminar in American Studies Section 002 Sports Culture
Course Note:	This course is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of topics and issues in American Studies in a seminar format from a Social Science perspective. It enables students to have contact with regular faculty in a small-class experience and to elicit their active participation in the topics under discussion.

This seminar examines the role of sports culture in the social and political construction of individual and collective American identities. Special attention will be given to issues of power, and race, gender, sexuality, class, and nationalism. Readings and films will cover contemporary and historical issues in baseball, basketball, football, boxing, and cheerleading.
