Description

The seminar will examine selected critical aspects of the ancient rhetoric, including the status of rhetoric as a discipline, the modes of proof in oral advocacy, and what is called stasis theory (the idea that advocacy should focus on an identifiable theme). I hope also to consider the role of rhetoric in ancient education. Key texts will be: Gorgias' Helen; Plato's Gorgias and Phaedrus; Aristotle's Rhetoric; Cicero's de Inventione and de Oratore; and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria. (We will not, of course, be reading these works in their entirety; but, knowledge of both Greek and Latin is desideratum.) Hermagoras of Temnos will be considered.
