Nine credits chosen between SPANISH 279 and 399; or 2 RCLANG 324 and six credits chosen between Spanish 279 and 399.

Primary Instructor:

Too often in a course like this, the word “gender” is feminized and associated with women studies and feminist thought. Although this course starts by looking at the birth of feminism at the end of the 19th century and the impact it had on Spanish society at the time, it considers how intellectuals — both men and women — reacted to this new ideology. For many of them, “la cuestión de la mujer” became a huge concern and even came to be considered a national problem. Not only was it attempting to change women’s role in society, it also affected men’s role and fuelled a movement to reconsider its associations with power and empire that evolved in the 20th century and has not been fully resolved by contemporary Spanish society.

The course will look at different cultural products from the 19th century to today and explore how their representations of gender reveal political, ideological and cultural assumptions of their creators and/or their societies. Inevitably, we will also consider how our own readings of them may be influenced by similar assumptions we hold.

Course readings include short stories, novels, plays and poetry by Benito Pérez Galdós, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Carmen de Burgos, Miguel de Unamuno, Federico García Lorca, Gloria Fuertes, Max Aub, Paloma Pedrero and Ignacio Martínez de Pisón among others. In addition to these texts we will also examine other cultural products such as school textbooks, music or film.
