GERMAN 102 is the continuation of GERMAN 101; please see the description for GERMAN 101 for a description of the general philosophy underlying this course. In addition to the textbook, a popular children's book (Eine Woche voller Samstage) is integrated into the course. Students will watch a variety of video materials, including the beginning of the film Mostly Martha, the Oscar-nominated short film Ausreißer, the first episode of Verliebt in Berlin (the German version of Ugly Betty), and a documentary on the Fall of the Berlin Wall. There are also additional cultural readings in English along the lines outlined in the description for GERMAN 101.

By the end of the academic term, students will have been exposed to all the essentials of German grammar, which will then be reviewed and extended in the third and fourth semesters. Students will be able to cope with a variety of conversational situations and written texts. In particular, they will have the necessary "survival skills" for a visit to a German-speaking country, as well as a basic foundation for doing intellectual work in German.
