This single camera video course is designed to teach the theoretical, aesthetic and technical principles of making a meaningful and compelling documentary. It is an introduction to documentary as visual story. The class will focus on knowing what makes a story compelling and how to clearly convey the ideas visually. We will explore the craft from the genesis and shaping of story ideas, to shooting powerful images that drive the story, to the capture and use of sound, to script writing, narration, and advanced editing with Final Cut Pro. Additionally, through class readings and the viewing of clips, we will investigate current and past issues in non-fiction production including documentary form, objectivity in documentary production, ethics, and representation.
