Primary Instructor:

The course sequence AAPTIS 403-404, Advanced Modern Standard Arabic I & II, will be offered to students who have successfully completed AAPTIS 202 or 204 at U-M or the equivalent and wish to continue Arabic study for both academic and professional purposes. The course covers a wide range of authentic texts, including short stories, essays, poems, plays, as well as commercial advertisements, business correspondence, banking documents and transactions, economic reports and articles. The media component of the course exposes students to political, economic, historical and social contemporary issues in the Arab world. All the materials introduced in this course are carefully selected from newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations and documentaries from different parts of the Arab world.

    In addition, the course features:
  • An extra hour in the afternoon for conversation practice,
  • Cultural trips to the Arab American National Museum, Arab Community Centers, bookstores and shops in Dearborn, Michigan;
  • Videocassettes featuring speakers on Islamic Banking and Economics;
  • Occasional lectures in Arabic on topics of interest to students, delivered by guest visiting scholars from Arab universities who will be available on UM campus during summer terms.

Class Format:

The course follows the communicative-proficiency, learner-centered approach to language learning and teaching. Daily activities involve extensive oral and written practice-group interactions, debates and role-playing. The class meets five days per week, four hours per day for eight credits and is entirely conducted in Arabic.
