In recent years the news coverage of Africa has focused on a continent replete with disease, poverty and conflict. Partly in response, interest in Africa among the general public has proliferated. To meet the growing curiosity there has been surge of popular volumes claiming to provide an accurate diagnosis of the source of the African malaise. There have also been a number of books debating the role of the international community in supporting or hindering African development through foreign aid and associated development policy strategies. The course will focus on a critical reading of a selection of these books aimed at a better understanding of the dynamics of African development. In addition to the books students will attend lectures by a number of prominent Africanist scholars and view a number of films of direct relevance to the content of the books.
