The mission of the course is to develop critical and analytical skills in a variety of visual contexts. Students will be challenged to understand and define modes of visual language and descriptive processes. Your foundation in both understanding and expression of an African-American aesthetic is based on knowledge and understanding of contemporary and historical work and issues. Readings will be initiated by text, individual research, class handouts, videotapes, and lectures.
New and urgent educational, social, community, state, national, and global concerns are engulfing us and will test the basic fabric of our educational system and nation. The changing demographics of our nation foretell a society far different in ethnic and cultural make-up from any this young nation has known.
