This course is an introduction to the cultures and histories of South Asia, the region of the world that today is constituted by the modern nation-states of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. The aim of the course is to provide a broad over-view of the various historical, cultural, social, and political developments that contribute to making the region one of the most diverse in the world. The course includes a study of the following themes: social and religious gender and sexuality; and commercial relations with a wider world. We will close with a review of India's encounter with modern Europe, the establishment of colonial rule in the subcontinent, and the formation of the nation-states of today.
