This writing course focuses on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813)—the novel and its recent adaptations. We consider film adaptations by the same name (1995, 2005) and the 2004 Bride and Prejudice, as well as excerpts from the novels Bridget Jones’ Diary (1996) and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009). The first half of the semester is centered on the novel and literary criticism; the second half on film and novel adaptations, and on the problem of adaptation itself. Writing assignments for this course will engage with cultural criticism from within academia and outside it.
