The primary text of this course will be the delightful classic epic-romance, Ariosto’s Orlando furioso. While the poem will be studied against the background of political and cultural change in Renaissance Italy, a focus of the class will also be on close reading of its famous “golden octaves”. In honor of the Fall 2012 Theme Semester on Translation, students will work on producing their own versions of Ariosto’s verses, that have been translated often and often badly. Students in ITALIAN 483 will also write an essay or two on some aspect of the poem.
