This course, designed for advanced undergraduate students, will review current studies towards understanding cellular mechanisms that underlie neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and ALS). The focus is upon basic research, rather than clinical aspects. Emphasis will be placed upon experimental approaches and interpretation of data presented in scientific journals. The primary reading material will be scientific articles from the primary literature.
Cell Biology (MCDB 428) is a good companion course.
Note to students: Students will be printing journal articles, many with color figures, posted on CTools. Estimated cost: $50-$100.
Course Requirements:
Students will do extensive reading on their own and participate in-class discussions. Evaluation will be based upon quizzes, participation, presentations, and a written research proposal.
