After long years of silence, France has begun to reexamine its somber record during its closest colony’s struggle for independence. A spate of recent films have highlighted France’s use of torture, inscription, and civilian killings, but, also, extreme measures employed by Algerians. Did modern terrorism as we know it originate during the Algerian War? Did postcolonial criticism also arise during the conflict? We will juxtapose movies such as Bouchareb’s Indigènes (2007) and Hors-la-loi (2010) with films, documents, and writings from the time to reflect on the repercussions of violence and lessons for the future.
