An introductory survey course on the history of the Jews in the Roman and Byzantine worlds, from the arrival of the Romans in the East in the first century BCE through the Arab conquests in the seventh and eighth centuries CE. This is the formative age of Judaism which witnessed the gradual rise of the rabbis and their literature, the institution of the synagogue, the parting of the ways with Christianity, and the ongoing struggle of the Jews to define their place in the ever changing world. The course will explore all these topics and will discuss political history, communal life, literature and religion. All materials will be provided in English.

Course Requirements:

Assignments include two short written assignments, a midterm, and a final.
