This course will conduct a survey of American television genres, as part of an examination of both genre theory and the evolution of generic forms and conventions. The function of genre in the production and reception of television will be considered as we assess genre simultaneously as an industrial strategy and cultural practice. In addition to exploring shifts in televisual modes of address, this course will engage with the roles of emerging technologies, globalization, fan practices, and other economic, social and cultural practices in shaping past and contemporary television genres.
