This course counts as an elective toward the Spanish minor requirements. This course is not suitable to take with SPANISH 308. Conducted in Spanish.

Enforced Prerequisites: SPANISH 298 and six credits chosen between SPANISH 279 and 399; OR SPANISH 298, two RCLANG 324 and three credits chosen between SPANISH 279 and 399.
Repeatability: May not be repeated for credit.

This course is an introduction to the Spanish sound system and establishes the basis for application of principles at the phonetic (especially articulatory and acoustic phonetics) and phonological levels of linguistic analysis. The first week introduces basic principles in phonological analysis and the structure of sound systems in general. During the next nine weeks students examine the descriptive properties (consonants; vowels; syllables; stress; and intonation) and phonological processes relevant to the Spanish sound system. The last portion of the term is a focus on acoustic phonetics, hypothesis testing, and spectrographic analysis.

Course Requirements:

Students will also read research articles written in the laboratory method on Spanish dialectology. Students will apply their knowledge of course content in various data analysis activities, homework assignments, article summaries, quizzes, and exams.

Class Format:

The course will be conducted in Spanish, although some readings will be in English.
