Primary Instructor:

As the ancient Indian discipline of yoga becomes increasingly popular worldwide it is important to query its early development, transformation over the centuries, and the possibilities that it holds forth to its practitioners. Graphing milestones in the history of yoga, this course is also an introduction to the visual, literary, and religious cultures of South Asia. The course includes visits to art museums and yoga studios in the Ann Arbor area.

Course Requirements:

  • Attendance and participation, 10%
  • 10 Response Papers (less than 2 pages each), 20%
  • Midterm Examination, 20%
  • Short Paper (4-5 pages), 15%
  • Longer Paper (9-10 pages), 15%
  • Final Examination, 20%

Intended Audience:

This course is open to all students and does not have a prerequisite.
