In this course, students will develop skills in the art of writing by
focusing on another, truly universal art form: music. By exploring
questions related to music and contemporary culture, students will gain
experience crafting lively, well-organized, and insightful critical and
analytical essays. We will concentrate on aspects of writing that will
prove vital throughout students’ academic careers and beyond:
constructing a clear and well-defined thesis, building a complex argument,
employing textual and other evidence effectively, and developing lucid and
elegant prose. Students will work closely with their peers and with the
instructor in these endeavors.
In assignments and discussions, we will examine texts on various facets of
music, including the contemporary music industry and the culture of
celebrity in America; variations across genres, time periods, and cultures;
the intersection of music and politics; and the psychological dimensions of
making and appreciating music, among other issues. We will also consider
the particular relationship between writing and music—what lessons can
one art form draw from the other, and vice versa?
No musical background is required; all musical tastes are welcome.
