What makes a hipster? It is the calculator watch, the Instagram app, the thrift shop glasses, all of
the above? This course explores the hipster as a collector, by reading from and writing in literary,
popular, and new media forms. As we trace the image of the hipster, we will interrogate the
relationships between objects and social identities in popular culture.
This course will develop an awareness of the types of arguments, analysis, genres, and rhetorical
situations that we encounter in college writing, and consider how these translate into non-academic writing. Through our discussions and writing workshops, we will practice flexible
strategies for organizing, revising, and refining writing and the ideas we aim to express through
it.
