The period between 1350 and 1550 in Italy is known by various names: the Renaissance, the late Middle Ages, the beginnings of modernity. These two centuries saw the flowering of medieval Christian culture, as Italian artists created the culminating artistic and literary works of the Christian Middle Ages and the seminal works of early modernity. For Italians – who for centuries had dominated the Mediterranean economy – it was also an era of incipient economic decline. The discovery of the Americas and technological advances in ship-building and navigation would give rise to a new Atlantic economy and increasingly marginalize the Mediterranean over the coming centuries. This course covers the great Italian thinkers of the era, with lectures situating the achievements of the Renaissance in the context of Italian, Mediterranean, and global history.
