Description

Math 593 is the first half of the introductory graduate algebra sequence. Math 593 is on rings and modules, with an emphasis on the structure theorem for modules over a PID. We will also discuss tensor and exterior products, and the elementary theory of bilinear forms. Along with Math 594 in the Winter, this class is intended to prepare students for the qualifying exams in algebra. Textbook: Dummit and Foote “Abstract Algebra”, 3rd ed., Wiley 9780471433347
