PSYCH 112 may not be included in a concentration plan in Psychology. Students in PSYCH 112 are required to spend five hours outside of class participating as subjects in research projects.

This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.

Primary Instructor:

Psychology is the study of the mind that is our common and unique inheritance as human beings. It is an exciting field, where our understanding of ourselves is constantly examined, challenged, and extended.

The goals of this course are:

  1. to introduce you to scientific models of human thought, feeling, and behavior
  2. to apply these models to understand better your own mind and behavior and those of others
  3. to develop intermediate-level academic skills.

Major topics include:

  • the origins of mind, neurons and what they do
  • how we adapt to the world around us
  • how we remember (and why we sometimes misremember)
  • how we think
  • why we have feelings
  • how we are influenced by others
  • how the mind can break down
  • how we can help ourselves

Academic skills include the abilities to follow an editorial style (APA 6), to write an informative synopsis of a research article, to conduct effective library research online, and to identify and articulate psychological explanations.

Course Requirements:

Assessment will take the form of written assignments, unannounced quizzes, and possibly public speaking. There are no exams in this class, but there are unannounced quizzes. Participation in the Psychology subject pool is required for course credit.
