Primary Instructor:

This course will introduce you to the concept of disability culture, and will look at a range of texts, performances and films by and about disabled artists or culture makers. We will look at sports films like Murderball, transgender/Two Spirit Cherokee writer Qwo-Li Driscill’s work; the work and reception of blind indigenous Australian musician Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, American Sign Language Poetry, dance videos, short stories, visual art and more. We will reflect upon the intersections between gender, race and disability, on international developments and alliances, and on the place of the arts in the exciting formation of a new cultural movement. Creative work will be part of this class: we will explore through the arts, not just about them.

Course Requirements:

Short responses and conversations on CTools. One essay, midterm exam.
