Primary Instructor:

This course will explore ways in which ecology and evolutionary biology are relevant for human health and disease. To that end, the course will cover a variety of basic concepts in ecology and evolutionary biology and explore how they relate to human health and disease.

Specific topics that will be covered include:

  • biodiversity and infectious diseases;
  • emerging infectious diseases;
  • the gut microbiome and human health;
  • evolution and cancer; and
  • the evolution of antibiotic resistance.

The course will also provide students with opportunities to learn how to critically evaluate the primary literature as well as popular press accounts, and to improve their written and oral communication skills.
