In this first-year writing course we will be studying narratives about financial, viral, ecological and other types of apocalypse by looking at a broad range of media: non-fictional (magazine articles, scientific reports and religious texts) and fictional texts (short stories, novels, and graphic novels) and audio-visual material such as feature and documentary films, TV shows, and video games. In our readings of the materials we will look at the way these texts handle issues of class, gender, race, politics and religion whether they’re about a viral outbreak or a stock market crash.

The goal of this course is to provide students with objective, critical and argumentative critical thinking and writing skills. Students will focus on producing and improving argumentative academic texts by working closely with their peers and the instructor through workshops and extensive revision and editing.
