First-year students will spend at least four years at this institution — but what kind of institution is it? How does it work? Who’s in charge? And what is a university, anyway? In this seminar, we will read various accounts of the academy — ancient and modern, philosophical and fictional, serious and satiricial. To link the academy in the abstract to the academy we live in, we will also take a number of field trips to various campus locations to learn more about the University of Michigan — its governing principles, its financial practices, and its physical operations.

Preparation, active participation, three short essays.
