The Bible comprises a series of texts that are undoubtedly among the most influential ever written. These texts serve as the foundation for Judaism and Christianity, which understand them to be sacred scripture. They have also generated some of the most enduring images, symbols, and expressions in the Western literary tradition. They also make for great reading.
In this class, we approach the Bible exactly the same way we approach any classic work of literature. We explore characters, plot-lines, styles of narration, point-of-view, etc? We also consider historical context and different theories about how, why, by whom, and when these texts were written. Our readings this academic term will come exclusively from the Old Testament.
There will be two papers, short responses, and final exam.
No prior knowledge of the Bible is necessary.
