This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Islam as a religious tradition. After examining the fundamental sources of Islam, particularly the Qur'an and the reports about the activities and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, we will discuss how these foundations gave rise to the beliefs and practices of Muslims and to an Islamic civilization that boasts spectacular achievements in such areas as law, theology, science, philosophy, art, and spirituality. Special attention will be given the internal diversity of Islam and the astounding variety of its interpretations by its followers from its rise until today.

Course Requirements:

Quizzes, an essay, a midterm, and a final exam.

Intended Audience:

Any student interested in Islam and its role in the shaping of Muslim societies.
