This course counts as literature credit toward the Spanish minor and is suitable to be taken in conjunction with SPANISH 308.

Enforced Prerequisites:
Nine credits chosen between SPANISH 279 and 399; or two RCLANG 324 and six credits chosen between SPANISH 279 and 399.
May be elected twice for credit. May be elected more than once in the same term.
Primary Instructor:

This course will involve an in-depth reading of Spain's earliest and greatest epic poem, the Cantar del Mio Cid, which recounts the battles and struggles of the Christian soldier Ruy Díaz de Vivar, known to posterity as "the Cid." We will read the whole poem and discuss its social, historical, and religious context. Students will learn about the history of Christian-Muslim military conflict in the Peninsula and the other literary and historical representations of the Cid.
