The course is designed to provide insight into the culture of Spanish-speaking peoples; content-based themes develop cultural awareness and encourage students to formulate opinions on a variety of contemporary issues through reading, video, discussion, and writing. Classroom activities stress communication across the four skills with a strong oral/written component.

Each section of SPANISH 230 meets four hours each day. Students must attend all hours and plan to attend periodic cultural presentations during the break between classes.

A student who misses either of the first two meetings of any course offered by the Department of Romance Languages may be dropped from the course for non-attendance.

Students with any previous study of Spanish must take the Spanish placement test before enrolling. Details available online at www.lsa.umich.edu/rll/langinstruct/placementtest.html.
