Primary Instructor:

Woman have been writing powerful poetry for millennia, and their surviving voices are more plentiful and varied than we might ever have imagined fifty years ago. Moreover, the past fifty years have been a period of unprecedented richness and diversity for women’s poetry in English. In this course, we will be reading selected poetry by women from the earliest surviving records to the present day, concentrating in the second half of the course on American poetry of the late-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Students will also scan current literary magazines for poems they’d like to share with other members of the class. Our recurrent questions will be about the intersections of public and private history, lyric form and the varieties of “meaning,” "identity" (gender, class, nationality, race, learning) and poetic voice.

Course Requirements:

In class and out, students should be prepared for intensive close reading of the poems. Frequent brief response postings on CTools, frequent (and brief) oral presentations. Two essays.
