How should ‘healthy’ be defined? What is the measure of medical progress? Are there more responsible ways than others to use medical technology? Does one have a right to health care, a right to die, or right to terminate a pregnancy? If so, what are the bounds of these rights, both legal and moral? Are there circumstances when physician-patient confidentiality can justifiably be breached? Can there be a morally tenable eugenics? Bioethics, as a form of applied ethics, is an interdisciplinary exploration of these and other philosophical questions surrounding life, death, and the health professions. It can be approached more theoretically or in a way that is more grounded in the facts of particular questions or cases. In this course, students will be familiarized with both classical and contemporary approaches to bioethics, get hands-on experience with working through key bioethical questions through structured, in-class debate, become sensitized to the problems inherent in applying moral theory to real-life ethical challenges, and receive guidance on productive ways to philosophically navigate through those challenges. Students will be exposed to both traditional and progressive philosophical methodologies, as well as both mainstream and alternative vantage points on the bioethical questions examined.
