During the “Sport and the Academy” theme semester, Introduction to Political Theory offers a special Sports Edition. It tackles the questions of political theory — freedom and equality, justice and fairness, governance and institutions, human flourishing and the good life — with examples from the world of sports and physical culture. The readings draw from classical political theory as well as from academic and popular texts about sports.
The course itself will be taught as a game: students have many different choices for assignments. There will be a lot of training (practicing various skills needed to think well about political questions) and optional matches, battles, and quests where those skills are tested. Grading will particularly reward risk taking, initiative, and problem solving.
Primarily for first and second year students
The course uses various interactive technologies, and a laptop is recommended but not required.
