Description

What exactly is capitalism?
Does it express itself similarly in all countries? In all time periods?

This course will explore the many varieties of capitalism, including: merchant capitalism, religious capitalism, industrial capitalism, financial capitalism, imperial capitalism, state capitalism, welfare capitalism, crony capitalism, and global capitalism.

Readings are drawn from such classics as Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. They are drawn also from the scholarly and popular works of contemporary economists, historians, and political scientists.

Grading is based primarily on a series of short essays and a cumulative final examination. Students should be prepared to participate actively in class discussions.

Intended Audience:

This course belongs to the LSA Honors Core. It satisfies no prerequisite to, or requirement of, the major or minor in economics.

Class Format:

Two 80-minute lecture-sessions and one 50-minute discussion-session per week.
