Description

In this seminar, we investigate the proposition that our knowledge about language is intertwined with our knowledge about culture and society. We take an integrated approach, drawing primarily on linguistics, linguistic anthropology and psycholinguistics, to explore the intersections and relationships between the production and perception of language and the production and perception of social positions, personae and stances. Topics will be drawn from areas such as experimental sociolinguistics, linguistic relativity, conceptual organization and categorization, language ideologies, psychological essentialism, ideologies of language and the social psychology of language. Topics will be tailored to student interests.

Course Requirements:

Course assessment will be individualized through consultations between each student and the instructor.

Class Format:

As a seminar, the course is discussion-based and students are expected to both participate in and lead class discussions.
