This course provides an introduction to the peoples and cultures of the Caribbean. Topics covered include: the history of the cultures, social structure and social organization of contemporary Caribbean states; family and kinship; religion, music and the arts; race, class, ethnicity, and national identity; Caribbean migration; politics and policies of socioeconomic change. Films and videos on the Caribbean shown in class.
Course Requirements:
Requirements: three 6-8 page student papers; participation in class discussion; regular class attendance is essential.
Intended Audience:
The course is open to both anthropology majors and non-majors.
