In this course, we will explore the dark territory of The Weird, a subclass of speculative fiction (an umbrella term encompassing the fantasy, science fiction, and horror genres). Weird stories are incredibly diverse, having elements of the transgressive, the violent, the fantastic, the ritualistic, and/or the supernatural. We’ll set our sights on 20th- and 21st-century manifestations of the genre. Authors will include Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, H.P. Lovecraft, Bruno Schulz, Flannery O’Connor, China Miéville, Kelly Link, Philip K. Dick, and Haruki Murakami, among others. In each class we’ll discuss one to two short stories. Your grade will be determined by four essays, daily quizzes, and participation. Students will have the option to work on a creative project as well.
