Primary Instructor:

Starting with the period 1900-1940, we will study the English-language poetry that has continued to inform how we read poetry today. Our touchstones throughout the semester will be work by the most influential poets — W.B. Yeats, Paul Laurence Dunbar, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Langston Hughes, H.D., W.C. Williams, Marianne Moore, Gertrude Stein, Robert Frost, and others — but we will also devote some time to special topics like subtext in poems, the difference between the lyric and the narrative modes, and how to define an experimental poem. The objective of the course is for the student to become a better reader of poetry and to identify techniques and themes of modern poetry that continue to inform contemporary poetry.

Course Requirements:

The format is lecture and discussion. Requirements include four annotations, two poems, and a final presentation.
