Why do we have the capacity to fear? Why are some people afraid of heights, while others climb mountains? Why do only some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder? Can we change what people are afraid of?

When something terrifying happens, we usually remember it: The interlacing of fear and memory is essential for survival. It molds our lives by motivating us to avoid danger and seek safety. In this course, we will examine fear from a biopsychological standpoint, specifically focusing on fear-related memory in the brain. We will cover how fear-related memory is studied, its pathologies, as well as the future of research and remaining questions in this discipline. Through interactive activities, discussions, and a visit from a guest speaker, we will learn about how fear and memory work together. Outside of class, weekly readings and journal posts will keep us engaged. At the end of the term, we will teach each other about fear-related memory by presenting an article of choice.
