Almost no tourist location in the Western Hemisphere is more sought after — or more controversial — than the small island of Cuba, 103 miles (no, it’s not really 90) off the coast of Florida. Yet in order to understand what’s happening with Cuba’s tourist boom in 2017, we need to go back further: back to Hemingway, Bacardi, Prohibition gangsters, and the other myth makers that have fueled American tourism on the island for a century. Political balance is hard to achieve on this controversial subject, and so this course will provide a wide range of sources and perspectives from both sides of the Straits of Florida, from pro- and anti-Cuba voices, in order to give a sense of the discord and hope that characterizes Cuban tourism today.

This course will utilize everything from reality television to faculty visits to fiction to provide a broad overview of American tourism in Cuba over the past 100 years. Credit will be earned based on attendance and participation.
