Learn more about the the nature of political economies from a historical and area studies standpoint. This course surveys the political economy and economic history of Southeast Asia from circa 1400 to 1970, a long stretch that shows the uniqueness of a large regional area but is also fairly representative of global trends. We will start with a focus on the early modern period with the rise of Malacca, Ming hegemony, and religion-based trading networks. Then, we will move on to the development of mercantilism and colonialism in the region. From the development of mercantilism, we examine free trade as a response to the entrenched powers in the region. For the twentieth century, we will look at the rise of progressivism and later nationalism, along with the varied economic systems of modern nations in the region. This course also examines important themes such as piracy, slavery, and human trafficking.

Class Format:

Two 90-minute sessions per week.
