The biblical patriarchs have been held up as ideals of masculinity in Jewish and Christian communities for centuries. And yet, the biblical account of these men and their lives is sparse and cryptic. It will come as no surprise, therefore, that different religious communities have imagined the masculine strengths of these figures in very different ways. This course explores how different historical communities around the world have (re)constructed biblical masculinity and modeled their own gender ideals on these examples.
