Primary Instructor:

Linguists employ the concept of “language family” to group together languages that are known or believed to have descended from a common ancestor. Thus the languages that constitute the Romance language family — standard French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Rumanian, as well as their regional variants — all descend from the spoken Latin of the former Roman Empire. This course will examine whether the historically based concept of language family has descriptive validity. It will examine the linguistic features that the Romance languages have inherited in common and the individual distinguishing features that each language have developed in the course of its own evolution over time and space. The course will also examine the extent to which oral and written contact with other European languages may have introduced new structural features into individual Romance languages.

This ROMLING 300 class counts toward the Spanish major as a cognate course (300-level).

Course Requirements:

There will be two examinations and a research paper. Readings will be made available in a course pack or on a course Canvas site.

Intended Audience:

Students who wish to take this course are strongly advised to have had a previous introductory course in linguistics. A basic knowledge of at least one Romance language would be helpful (though not required).
